The History of Muddy Creek Christmas Lights: A Journey of Light, Joy, and Community
Muddy Creek Christmas Lights has become one of the region’s most cherished holiday traditions—a heartwarming, dazzling display that brings families together in the spirit of the season. What began as a small personal project has evolved into a beloved community event, driven by passion, creativity, and a deep desire to spread joy.
A Humble Beginning: 2019
The story began in 2019, when creator Jacob Burris—while driving for Uber—decided to bring some holiday cheer to the streets by placing Christmas lights on the roof of his car. That simple idea sparked something bigger. Later that year, the first public display of Muddy Creek Christmas Lights was born. Even in its earliest form, the show featured bright, synchronized lights set to music, offering a magical glimpse of what was to come.
A 2020 Miracle: Light During a Dark Time
In 2020, the world was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. With families isolated and holiday traditions disrupted, Jacob saw an opportunity to lift spirits. He expanded the display to 6,000 lights and set up a free show in his own yard. Visitors could tune into a local radio station to watch the lights dance in perfect harmony with classic holiday tunes. The response was overwhelming. The display became a beacon of hope and connection in a time of great uncertainty. Channel 8 News aired a live broadcast of the event, reaching over 6,000 viewers—and as if scripted by the holiday spirit itself, a real-life shooting star streaked across the sky during the segment, appearing to fly right over the Christmas tree.
Bigger and Brighter: 2021–2022
By 2021, the light count had grown to 30,000, with the addition of three Mega Trees—two standing 15 feet tall and one towering at 35 feet. The show expanded beyond Christmas to include a Halloween edition, offering a fully immersive seasonal experience. In 2022, the lights doubled to 60,000, and the crowds grew with them. The community embraced the show more than ever, drawn in by the breathtaking visuals, synchronized music, and the sense of togetherness that filled the air. That same year, a customer’s post about the show went viral and caught the attention of Shannon Bream from Fox News. Soon after, Muddy Creek Christmas Lights received national recognition, bringing in visitors from far and wide and cementing its place as a must-see holiday destination.
A New Chapter: 2023 and Beyond
As the display continued to grow, it became clear that a larger venue was needed. In 2023, the show moved to the Loudon Drive-In, offering more space but a bit less accessibility due to its distance from town. Still, the experience proved what was possible with the right space and community support. In 2024, the show relocated again—this time to Farragut Golf and Games, bringing it closer to the heart of the community. The display expanded to over 210,000 lights, with new features like Santa Land, selfie stations, 8-foot angel wings, and towering nutcrackers. It was a season of magical moments, creative milestones, and record-breaking joy.
A Community Effort
The growth and success of Muddy Creek Christmas Lights has never been a one-person effort. Jacob credits a team of dedicated friends and volunteers who have played key roles over the years—Alex Cain, Charlotte Leonard, Dewane Thomas, his son Lucas, and his mother Debbie Thomas. Their tireless work setting up and tearing down the displays, year after year, has helped bring the magic to life for thousands of families.
This Year: 2025
In 2025, Muddy Creek Christmas Lights found a new home at Faith Promise Church, offering even more room to grow and welcome guests. This season also marks the exciting debut of our new mascot, Stumpy, who will be making special appearances throughout the holidays to spread cheer and fun. Even more meaningful, we’re honored to partner with Second Harvest Food Bank, working together to support families in need during this special time of year. It’s a reminder that the magic of the holidays is not just in the lights, but in the love we share with our community.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future
The journey of Muddy Creek Christmas Lights is far from over. Jacob and his team are actively working to secure a permanent location for the display—one that will allow for continued growth, creativity, and connection for years to come. With the support of volunteers, sponsors, and the incredible community that has embraced the show since day one, the future shines bright. The mission remains the same: to create magical experiences, spark joy, and build a holiday tradition that families will treasure for generations.
